The Skills Training Centre was established in 1995 to offer vocational skills training to the unemployed and school-leavers over the age of 17 years. The following courses are offered:

WELDING

This course is a certificate programme, accredited with the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MerSETA) following the unit standards in basic welding principles. Candidates will receive a St. Anthony’s Certificate on successful completion of the course.

Aim

To use and apply mechanical and welding technology, tech-niques, processes and skills, as applied in the welding industry.

Employment Opportunities

You will be marketable in the welding field as learner welders, apprentices or assistant welders.

Course content:

The course content is 90% practical training and 10% theory.

  • Safety/hand tools/power tools and housekeeping
  • Reading drawings/welding symbols
  • Welding theory
  • Grinding/cutting / measuring and marking off
  • Shield metal arc welding- all positions
  • Oxy acetylene welding – all positions
  • Tungsten gas welding – all positions
  • Gas metal arc welding all positions
  • Fluxcor welding all positions

ELECTRICAL

This course is a certificate programme. Candidates will receive a St. Anthony’s Certificate on successful completion of the course.

Aim

To install, test and maintain functioning basic electrical circuits. Ability to test, using fault – finding techniques to diagnose and repair basic electrical circuits.

Employment Opportunities

You will be marketable as learner electricians, apprentices or assistant electricians

Course content:

The course content is 80% practical training and 20% theory.

  • Safety/hand tools/measuring tools
  • Introduction to electrical components and theory
  • House wiring/fault-finding
  • Conduit pvc/galvinised/norse cable installation
  • Identification of motors/motor testing

PLUMBING

This course is a certificate programme, accredited with the Construction Seta (CETA) following the unit standards in basic plumbing principles. Candidates will receive a St. Anthony’s Certificate on successful completion of the course.
Aim

To install, test and maintain functioning plumbing systems. To apply fault-finding techniques to diagnose and repair in-stalled plumbing systems.
Employment Opportunities

You will be marketable in the plumbing field as learners plumb-ers, apprentices or assistant plumbers.
Course content:

The course content is 90% practical training and 10% theory.

  • Safety/hand tools
  • Identification of materials
  • Reading drawings
  • Measuring/cutting/brazing and pipe threading
  • Assemble pipework
  • Sanitary / waste water and geyser installations
  • Drain laying and bylaws

BOOKKEEPING

This course is a certificate programme, accredited with the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB). Candidates will receive a St. Anthony’s EquipYouth Certificate as well as a National Certificate in Junior Bookkeeping (CJBIcb/NQF L3) on successful completion of the course.
Aim

To use and apply basic bookkeeping principles and accounting ethics.
Employment Opportunities

You will be marketable in the Accounting field as Junior Bookkeepers, Accounts Clerks/Assistants, Debtors Clerks/Creditors Clerks/Payroll Clerks
Course content:

The course content is 80% theory and 20% practical.

AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR & MAINTENANCE

This course is a certificate programme, accredited with the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MerSETA) following the unit standards in basic motor mechanic principles. Candidates will receive a St. Anthony’s Certificate on successful completion of the course.
Aim

To use and apply motor mechanic technology, techniques, pro-cesses and skills, as applied in the motor industry.
Employment Opportunities

You will be marketable as a qualified motor mechanic.
Course content:

The course content is 80% practical training and 20% theory.
